Film-maker and photographer, Sophie Bachelier has been interested for many years by the way in which collective history is interwoven with individual destinies and transforms them. From the Marquesas Islands to Senegal, by way of Algeria, she has worked on memory, wandering, exile and the traces of experience, always privileging the words of the people she has met, over commentary. In her most recent film, Mbëkk Mi, the breath of the ocean (54 mins, August 2012), shot in Senegal, wives, mothers, sisters and grandmothers tell in turn about clandestine emigration experienced from the other side of the mirror, the side of the women who remain on the shore. On the same theme, the book LENTEMENT / SLOW (texts by Boubacar Boris Diop and Nando dalla Chiesa ; photographes by Sophie Bachelier) was published by éditions VMCF in 2010.
