Pierre-Yves Borgeaud (born August 25, 1963 in Monthey, Switzerland) is a diminutive, bald Swiss filmmaker, video artist and performer. Best known for his musical films and videos, and for winning the Golden Leopard in Video at the 56th Locarno International Film festival with iXième : diary of a prisoner.
He's got a bachelor's degree in arts from the Lausanne University in 1990, drawing up his thesis about the influence of jazz on the French literature (Le Jazz dans le roman). Concurrently to his studies, he's producing Super-8 movies then writing, producing and directing in 89 Encore une histoire d'amour. This short feature film in 16 mm. is selected for the International Locarno Film Festival. Since 86, he's working as an independent journalist, writing about music, TV and films for different papers, magazines and radios. He's also playing the drums in a power jazz band called Urgent Feel and produces 3 CDs of it.
In 1996, Pierre-Yves Borgeaud decides to devote his full time and energy to the video. He goes to the USA where he achieves a Certificate at the New York University, dpt. of Film, Video & Broadcasting. Since 97, he's shooting a lot, and especially for the ECM label in Germany, directing documentaries and music videos with Jan Garbarek, Anouar Brahem, Tomasz Stanko and others. He also participates to a video installation workshop given at the Film/Video Arts, New York. In 1998, he initiates a new way of live interacting between video and music, presenting live concerts with keyboard player Pierre Audétat, guitarist Christy Doran, trumpet player Nils Petter Molvaer or composer Don Li, among others.
Performer, producer, director, cameraman and editor, he founded Momentum Production as the creative frame for his various explorations in video. In 2000, he received the price "Jeunes Créateurs" in video awarded by the Fondation Vaudoise pour la Promotion et la Création Artistique. In 2003, his first long feature film iXième: diary of a prisoner, wins the Golden Leopard of the Video Competition at the Locarno International Film festival. In 2004, the short film Interface is nominated for the best Swiss short film. In 2007, his musical film with Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour, Return to Goree is distributed world wide.
