In Marie-Galante, workers are working at their sugar factory on probation. Lending their voices to slave testimonies for the duration of the film (pronounced at the trial of their slaveholder in 1842), they awaken the echoes of a forgotten memory.

In 1842, the enslaved man Sébastien died in a cell on the island of Marie-Galante in Guadeloupe, following months of neglect. The slaveholder running the sugar plantation where Sébastien worked had suspected him of poisoning the cattle. His death led to the trial of the slaveholder, who was acquitted.
Around 175 years after these events, filmmaker Sylvaine Dampierre gets workers at the modern Grande Anse sugar factory on Marie-Galante to read out the testimonies from this court case. Much has changed, but uncomfortable parallels with the 19th century continue to this day. The work is hard and poorly paid, and prospects are uncertain-the workers can be easily replaced.
Dampierre subtly intertwines contemporary globalization with abuses stretching back centuries. "We were those slaves!" exclaims one of the workers in surprise after reading the testimonies. Dampierre's portrait shows how the factory and its workers are fated to interdependence; local people attending a church service ask God to ensure the sugar processing continues.

In 1842 stierf Sébastien na maanden van verwaarlozing in een cel in Guadeloupe, op het eiland Marie-Galante. De baas van de suikerplantage waar hij als slaaf moest werken, verdacht hem ervan dat hij vee had vergiftigd. Het werd een rechtszaak, de slavenhouder werd vrijgesproken.
Zo'n 175 jaar later laat documentairemaker Sylvaine Dampierre de getuigenissen uit de zaak Sébastien opnieuw uitspreken, ditmaal door werknemers van de huidige suikerfabriek Grande Anse op Marie-Galante. Veel is veranderd, maar er zijn ook ongemakkelijke overeenkomsten met de negentiende eeuw. Het werk is zwaar en slecht betaald, de vooruitzichten ongewis. Arbeiders zijn inwisselbaar.
Dampierre slaagt erin de gevolgen van de huidige globalisering op een subtiele manier te verweven met misstanden die eeuwen teruggaan. "Wij waren die slaven!" zegt een arbeider verbaasd na het lezen van de getuigenissen. In Dampierres portret zijn fabriek en werknemers aan elkaar overgeleverd, getuige de kerkdienst waarbij de inwoners God vragen de suikerverwerking te behouden.
