In 1841, Edmond Albius, a twelve year old slave, developed the artificial fertilization of vanilla. The economy of Reunion Island was turned upside down... Edmond Albius was the slave of Ferréol Beaumont-Bellier, a great philanthropic owner who took him in and educated him. Through the portrait of Edmond Albius is traced the history of the slaves of Reunion, the great forgotten ones of the prosperity of the island. Edmond Albius got no glory from his discovery, not even a roof over his head. He owed his recognition only to the determination of a few people and it was only in 1981, one hundred and forty years after his discovery, that the town of Sainte-Suzanne erected a monument in his memory.
