L'Autre Algérie aimed to portray the intricate reality of everyday life beyond the media images of terrorist attacks and to support independent television production in Algeria. In 1998, following a nation-wide competition, Internews provided five Algerian filmmakers with production grants to produce a current affairs story resulting in: Douleur Muette, Le Train de l'Espoir, Les Echos des Stades, Les Enfants d'El Mannar, Les Oiseaux Chantent toujours la Liberté. Nine European television channels co-produced and broadcast the series.
The series also participated in various international film festivals, and Azzedine Meddour's film Douleur Muette (Mute Suffering) received the Grimme Institute Prize in Germany awarding the 1998 best documentary on German television.
