Each year since 1979, in the city of Nantes, the FESTIVAL DES 3 CONTINENTS becomes a showcase for 80 to 100 films, dramatics & documentary, from Africa, Latin America and Asia.
This geographical interest, pioneer at its time, does no longer summarize the Festival des 3 Continents' full identity even though it is still what yields it and sometimes distinguishes it. The festival is fueled by curiosity, a taste for discovery, conversations and panels, diverse aesthetic concerns, love of films. For all these reasons it has become a treat for true cinephiles and casual filmgoers alike that know the Festival des 3 Continents' constant will to serve them.
Throughout the year, and through its various ongoing events committed to the cinemas of the South, the FESTIVAL DES 3 CONTINENTS discovers and presents films that it passionately wishes to defend.



Place of discovery
From the very start the FESTIVAL DES 3 CONTINENTS has consistently displayed a certain flair in its programming. Numerous tributes have made a mark: Raj Kapoor (in 1984) or Satyajit Ray (in 1980 and a full retrospective in 2006), the Argentine new wave (first in 1997 and again in 2002), Melvin Van Peebles (in 1979), Tolomouch Okeev (in 2002)...


The competitive section also has its claims to fame: Souleymane Cissé in 1979, Hou Hsiao-hsien in 1984, Abbas Kiarostami in 1987, Wong Kar-wai in 1991, Tsai Ming-liang in 1993, Jia Zhang-ke in 1998 and many others...


The FESTIVAL DES 3 CONTINENTS is and will remain a place of discovery.

Georges Cavalié
Born in 1950. Professor of history & geography at the Albert Camus senior high school (Nantes). He is an active member of the Board of Directors of the Festival des 3 Continents since the early 80s, and member of Continent J.

Born in Senegal in 1957, graduated from the Business School ESSEC in 1980, he began his professional career in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the commercial, cultural or consular sections of various diplomatic representation of France in South Korea Mozambique, Zimbabwe, United States (Houston and then to the United Nations in New York), Lebanon and Jordan, as well as the Quai d'Orsay in Paris.
After 15 years of diplomatic career, he chose to devote himself to his passion, film, becoming a member of the Directorate of European and International Affairs of the CNC (Centre National de la Cinématographie), before collaborating more closely with several organizing teams of international film festivals in France and abroad: Festival de Cannes, Quinzaine des Réalisateurs, FIPA Biarritz, Toronto International Film Festival, Festival International du film de La Rochelle, Paris Cinéma. He is at the head of the general management of the association LES 3 CONTINENTS that is in charge of the organization of the FESTIVAL DES 3 CONTINENTS in Nantes, since March 2008.

Competition and Official Selection Programming

Jérôme Baron
Born in Nantes in 1970. He studied in the University of Paris III and Paris VIII (Doctoral degree) and holds a Master's Degree in civilization from the University of Nantes.
From 1998 to 2007 he taught cinema in the Universities of Poitiers (Master in documentary film creation) and Nantes (history of film art), also in the National School of Architecture in Nantes. Since 2001, he teaches the history of cinema in preparatory class at the Cinésup Guist'hau High School and cinematographic analysis BTS audiovisual at the Leonard de Vinci High School of Montaigu.
In 2002 his interest in the field of cultural and popular educative actions lead him to leader the " Cinématographe-CinéNantes-Loire-Atlantique project (public movie theatre), very often distinguished as one of the most exigent and original place for film screening in France. 
Since 2004 he is also programmer of the documentary film selection in the FESTIVAL DES 3 CONTINENTS.
He has given numerous lectures on worldwide cinematography or aesthetic cinematographic issues.

Jean-Philippe Tessé
Born in 1977. He is programmer at the FESTIVAL DES 3 CONTINENTS since 2004 first for documentary film in Competition, then for the Official Competition. He is member of the editorial department of the CAHIERS DU CINEMA and head of the Web site cinema column and the cinema magazine Chronic'arto since 2003. Instructor, and creative-author of training packages for teachers in the context of the " Lycéens au cinéma." Has worked for various journals and magazines (Le Monde, La Vanguardia, La Lettre du cinéma...) and participated in the seminar " Lignes de temps " organized by l'Institut de Recherche et d'Innovation du Centre Pompidou. The author of Burlesque (ed. Cahiers du cinéma, Paris), has also contributed to several collective works: Hou Hsiao-Hsien (eds. Cahiers du cinéma, Paris), Erice / Kiarostami, correspondencias (CCCB, Barcelona), Erice / Kiarostami (CNAC Pompidou, Paris), Im Anfang war der Blick (Sonderzhal, Vienna).
