Editorial
An African film critic
Less than a year after the birth of cinema in Paris, the new art was celebrated in Africa, precisely in Alexandria (Egypt), then in Cairo from November 1896. The critics very early accompanied it as much in Egypt, Morocco, in Senegal, to name only these 3 countries, without forgetting expatriates. At the forefront of Africans in France, there is the pioneer Paulin Vieyra (born in Dahomey, current Benin, Senegalese citizen). Also a film director (Afrique-sur-Seine), he was nonetheless a regular critic until he defended a film thesis at Paris 10 Nanterre University, like Férid Boughédir (Tunisia), his famous colleague few years later.
In 2004, it was during the Carthage festival in Tunisia that the African Federation of Film Critics (AFFC / FACC) was created. Even if the main ambition is to take an African gaze at our cinemas, it is first and foremost a matter of being film critics quite simply.
Eighteen years after its birth, the AFFC/FACC (based in Dakar, Senegal) has the largest database in the world on African cinemas, with Africiné Magazine, which allows deep reflection on more than 20,600 films relating to Africa and its diasporas. The website (www.africine.org) provides unprecedented visibility of the work of African talents (including diasporas), their structures and events, including the Festival Continent Afrique de Pau.
Vicentia Aholoukpé, the General Delegate for Continent Afrique FilmFest, is honoring us with an Africiné Carte Blanche. She gives us the opportunity to present our way of working to the Pau public.
Our choice of films here reflects the very exercise of film criticism: it is not in the mode of "I like/I dislike", it is rather an invitation to curiosity, to get out of the beaten paths, to also follow the trends and not to forget the heritage.
It is for this last reason that, among heritage films, there is JOM by Ababacar Samb Makharam (Senegal, 1982) highlighting the resilience of civil societies and the importance of "common goods" (to speak like Patrick Chamoiseau), through the figure of the griot (at the same time bard, troubadour, instructor, West African historian).
