During the Algerian war, Oujda and the surrounding area made up the political backdrop of the Algerian revolution and the refuge of those fleeing from the war.
The region of Beni Boussaid, at the Morocco-Algerian border, six miles from Oujda, made up the passage point of arms and staples which were offered by Morocco and international organizations to the NLA (National Liberation Army).
In 1958, in order to suffocate the NLA by isolation, the French minister of Defense André Morice had an electric line built, thus separating Algeria from the Moroccan Borders.
The first attempts to cross this diabolic line were tragic failures and the NLA was isolated inside. A solution had to be found in order to force a way through.
Moussa, a Moroccan friend of the revolution, is the passer in charge of getting the groups of refugees across the mountains of Tlemcen to Berkane.
Upon arriving at Tlemcen, in order to complete his habitual mission, it happens that this time he must get across a group of deaf-mutes which come from the Bechar desert.
The head man, at arrival, informs Moussa that the path he is used to taking has been sold. He must take the road to Beni Boussaid. Except this road is on the Morice line, a 430 mile long belt which runs along the Moroccan-Algerian border. The line is electrified and heavily mined.
